Interview with Silvio Tscharner, Specialist for Information and Documentation (VET Diploma)

Since when have you been at the University of Bern, and in which capacity?
I started working in the vonRoll University Library in 2019, initially in the closed stacks and courier service (media logistics). I have worked in media processing and at the circulation desk in the Münstergasse Library since 2023.

Why is your work meaningful to you?
The Münstergasse Library is a very special place for me. I value the atmosphere that is steeped in tradition and, at the same time, I appreciate the sense of renewal and forward-thinking mindset shared by both staff and students. The Münstergasse Library is a centrally located learning hub that is also open to the general public – a connecting link between the university and the city. Many people come here to study, to write, or to borrow interesting books. It’s great to be a part of this community and to experience how knowledge is shared and used.

How would you describe the work culture at the University of Bern?
It is very positive! Never before have I worked with such a nice group of people. We treat each other with respect and share a great sense of humor; you can really feel that we are a team working toward a common goal. That is hugely motivating.

How do you contribute to shaping the work culture?
It is important to me to stay open to new ideas, to perform my work with care and to foster a positive team spirit. Supporting my work colleagues at all times is just as important to me as being friendly and humorous. All of that helps create an enjoyable work environment.

Have there been moments or supportive measures at the University of Bern that have helped your personal growth?
Yes, most definitely. I have learned so much from my work colleagues – professionally as well as personally. They have always supported and guided me well, particularly throughout my work-study training to become an Information & Documentation (I&D) Specialist.

If you had to describe the University of Bern in three words – what would they be?
Competent. Collaborative. Personable.
