Interview with Ueli Zwahlen, Relationship Management

Since when have you worked for the University of Bern, and in which capacity?
I have worked in the Relationship Management unit of the Communication & Marketing Office since February 2028. My main job is to manage the university’s web shop, but I also work on various marketing and communication projects, a current one being the organization of Food & Beverage and sustainability for the “Nacht der Forschung” (Night of Science).

Why is your work meaningful?
The University of Bern is an educational institution that instils a host of values which are more important than ever in today’s world – and on a global scale. It is both exciting and meaningful to me to work with young people and to be a part of a large, vibrant organization where many structures intertwine.

If you were to describe the University of Bern as an employer in one sentence – what would that sentence be?
The University of Bern is a large, vibrant and diverse organization that offers numerous opportunities for networking and advancement.

What do you personally contribute to the work culture?
It’s important to me to build new connections every day, to approach people with an open heart and a sense of humor, and to communicate clearly. This is how we can find shared values and achieve our goals together.

What do you value most about your workplace?
Its central location! The University of Bern is not a closed-off campus on a green meadow; it is located in the heart of the city. That makes us accessible, open and closely linked to the lives of the people of Bern – this results in many strengths.

Have there been specific moments or supportive measures that you’ve found particularly helpful for your development?
Yes. I work in a department that has its finger on the pulse. We motivate each other and are also encouraged by our supervisors to try new things and to grow professionally.

What does a typical workday look like for you?
I’m a bit of an early bird, so my day tends to start early. After airing my office and checking my emails and the web shop, I focus on my projects. There are always numerous meetings and opportunities to interact, which I really appreciate. We often have lunch together – this social interaction is very important to me. And sometimes we’ll wind down the day with a beer after work.
