André Czuppon, Commercial Apprentice

What is the first thing you tell your friends about your apprenticeship at the University of Bern?
That I am genuinely taken seriously here. Regardless of whether I am talking to a professor or to a staff member from Facility Services – I am always treated as an equal. I also like that my ideas and suggestions for improvement are taken seriously and supported. I really appreciate that.

What made you choose the University of Bern?
I knew as early as in eighth grade that I wanted to do my apprenticeship here. From the very first day of my taster internship, I was struck by the family-like atmosphere. Although I was only there on a short taster placement, I was accepted immediately and warmly welcomed. From then on, it was clear to me: I want to stay here.

What is the work culture like for you?
Respect is a very prominent part of the culture here – I always feel valued. We usually spend our breaks together, and I like that I can be with various groups. That is how I get to know people from other areas.

Which statement about the University of Bern resonates most with you?
For me, the University of Bern is diverse – not least because of the many different cultures and languages. For instance, I would never have imagined that I’d speak so much French here.

What surprised you most about your apprenticeship?
To be in such an international and diverse environment. There are many employees from French-speaking Switzerland and from other countries as well – and hat significantly expands one’s own horizon.

Who gives you the most support?
First and foremost, my vocational trainer. I can talk to her about anything and everything – whether it concerns school, work or personal matters. There are also many staff members with different areas of expertise; I always find someone who can help me with my school-related questions.

What does a typical workday look like for you?
That depends on which department I’m in. When I’m in the office. I start work at 8 a.m., I check my emails and work on my projects. Then there are breaks in between which I spend talking to my work colleagues. I finish work at 5 p.m.

If you had to describe the University of Bern in one word, what would that word be?
Family-like. It feels like one big family. We support each other and treat each other with respect.
