Interview with Robert Bubanko, Facility Services Manager

What do you think sets the University of Bern apart as an employer?
The University of Bern is a very interesting and diverse organization. Even though I’m only responsible for one facility, it gives me a lens into a vast range of areas. The spectrum of tasks and activities is truly impressive – you keep discovering new things and you get to appreciate the full scope of what is achieved at the university.

Is there a work tool that offers a good description of what you do?
Yes – my mobile workbench. It is my constant companion and has everything I need for my work – from regular and cordless screwdrivers to drills and installation materials. I have my workbench with me everywhere in the building, which gives me the flexibility to handle any task that comes my way – from hanging pictures to major repairs.

How does your role contribute to shaping the University of Bern?
I’m the go-to person when issues need to be resolved fast – for example, when there’s a technical problem during a lecture course. These moments are real highlights of my job for me. I’m also responsible for the building’s upkeep and value retention, which involves everything from cleaning to managing the technical infrastructure. It’s a good feeling when everything runs smoothly.

What has helped you grow in your job?
I came to the university with a lot of experience under my belt, but have since been able to expand my knowledge significantly– especially in the multimedia domain, with lecture hall technology for instance, such as projectors and sound systems. Each building is also highly individual, offering me intriguing insights into laboratory facilities and large technical systems, like steam installations. I truly appreciate these learning opportunities. There are also career advancement prospects, including the possibility of moving into a group leader or team leader position.

Do you have a specialist field?
Yes, I’m a plumber by trade. Anything related to water or plumbing falls into my specialist field. I also have extensive expertise in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, and can provide support to my colleagues in these areas.
